Taking the Next Steps

A common situation for many of us, when inspiration hits, is to put the cart before the horse. We may rush ahead with ideas and initiatives without first determining what conditions are actually required for something to succeed.

One thing leaders of an organization or business must learn is how to determine the next best step in terms of directing energy and resources to an enterprise or project. Often, this requires stepping back and “seeing the whole.” It requires a period of “letting go and letting come.” It requires conversations with others from outside your inner circle.

And finally it requires action– often rapid prototyping based on “aha moments” that come from reflection, rest, and conversation.

Sometimes we are stuck and get mired in inertia. Sometimes we take missteps and direct energy where it does not need to go. Sometimes we get overwhelmed with all the potential choices.

As a consultant and entrepreneur who has been through this process many times, I can help guide you and help think strategically about what the next best step is to take.

Growing from the Ground Up

I’m an expert at getting things off the ground. I love working with visionaries and passionate believers to manifest ideas into things that can be touched, seen and felt.

Here are a few things I’ve learned over the years about how to get things up and running:

1. Develop the confidence that you can “build the road by walking” and create the airplane by flying it. You will learn fastest by doing.

2. Ask for help and be open to the generosity and advice of others.

3. Be transparent. Admit mistakes.  Fail fast and be quick to try something else if one way isn’t working out.

4. Expertise is limitless. There is always someone or somewhere to go to learn what is needed.

5. Share the credit and praise each other often.  It feels good to be making something happen!

6. Make it fun. When we feel good and are having fun, we attract solutions to our problems.

7. Things never go the way you expect them to, so get good at letting things evolve.

8. Continually polish your ability to tell and share your story.

We all want to be part of something that has momentum. ESC can help you create the conditions for growth and manifestation.

Making Waves

One of my specialties is calling attention to things, especially good things and causes I believe in. People often ask me how I manage to draw sizable crowds to events. They marvel at the front page stories generated about my work. They see progress and effectiveness manifest when I am part of a group.

I have a “bias for action.” Sometimes people spend all their time aiming and never pull the trigger. I prefer to loft trial balloons, learn from them and make adjustments on the fly.

Getting a cause noticed and people to turn out is not a mysterious skill. It does involve committing time and energy to carry out a plan and make it happen.

I have found that many people and organizations  don't start promoting soon enough, and don’t budget for it. They don't do the work of creating a “word of mouth epidemic.”

A wise business owner once told me that the key to generating traffic for a retail business is to “create excitement.”

I have applied this truth to all of my work. Knowing how to “create excitement” is my jam and I can pass along my tips and process to you.
